Next to the Larchmont Library here in Norfolk is a temporary memorial that aims to bring attention to the high rate of suicide among American vets. It is estimated that 20 or more take their own lives every day. That's 140 each week, 7280 each year. This number is likely an indication of inadequate treatment for PTSD and traumatic brain injury. The memorial was created by Mission 22, a group which aims to increase awareness of the crisis.
Oh, I remember someone else posted pictures of this memorial, which is very effective. It's very sad to think any vets, at all, have to suffer like this. Here's hoping awareness over time will make a difference in detection and treatment.

DeleteGreat job capturing these images. It reminds us of the human cost of war. Many still fight and lose their lives long after the battles are over. Why is the memorial temporary?
ReplyDeleteThe memorial will be here for a year, and then it moves onto another location. I think that way more will see it.
