Even Weeds Don't Grow in the Pet Cemetery

To my regular visitors who may have tuned in to read one of my annual Halloween stories, I apologize, I wasn't able to pull it off this year. I'm living my own drama at the moment, plus I have two articles past due, so writing for fun will have to wait. In the meanwhile, you can create your own stories from these photos I took this summer in Salida, Colorado. The pet cemetery is just outside of town, and Sherpa Girl K and I found it while on an early morning exploration. There was quite a bit or roadwork going on, and she got dirty looks from a highway worker when she quickly pulled to side of the road to indulge the photographer.

  1. I do hope it is good drama. I always wonder who actually thinks that fake flowers look good in a landscape/garden/cemetary? They really never do. Cool shots though.

  2. Les, your post prompted me to go back and read your Halloween story of a year ago, and that and today's photos greatly affected me although in very different ways. The pet cemetery is poignant because I lost one of my cats earlier this year; she was elderly, and we were expecting/dreading the end but it was no less awful, and we see her grave in the garden every day. The story about the dying father hit home since my own dad had a massive stroke nearly a year ago, and is now in a nursing home. I've had a difficult relationship with my father over the years (although not quite reaching the level of familial dysfunction in your story!). But I disagree with your readers: I don't find the story "dark" at all, I find it a rather touching story of love, forgiveness, and redemption. That's where I find myself with my father today, forgiving him for anything and everything because in the end, he's human and fallible like the rest of us, did what he thought was right (even when it wasn't), and had a pretty hard childhood himself.

  3. Hope you drama slows down in real life. Love your photos of the cemetery. Why won't weeds grow at a pet cemetery?:)

  4. Perfect theme for Halloween! Good luck with those projects--I have a similar schedule lately. It will be fun to read your "scary" stories from previous Halloweens--I'll have to check back.

  5. Hmm, very Pet Sematary! And suitably creepy for Halloween.

  7. I was waiting for your Halloween story but the pictures will do: I find them plenty creepy. I hope the drama in your life will work itself out so you can get back to writing.

  8. Life can be rough. Just remember to cut yourself some slack.

Looks like they covered the entire cemetery in mulch ?

  9. All dead... pets and vegetation. Has the cemetery been sprayed with glyphosate? Great photo essay!
